Part I- Mamta, the love of a mother


1949-A village in Bengal


“Vakra-Tunndda Maha-Kaaya Surya-Kotti Samaprabha

Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarva-Kaaryessu Sarvadaa”

He sat with folded hands, eyes closed. The incense swirled around him in a thin wisp of fragrance. The temple was calm. The flowers; the frangipani blossom, like stars, the marigolds like sun drops and the roses, like ruby jewels, rested at the feet of the god with one tusk. He prayed for an auspicious beginning and a fitting end. He prayed for all obstacles to be removed and above all, he prayed for the fortitude to continue on the journey he had been chosen to undertake as a loving husband and a doting father.

He touched his forehead to the ground and thanked Lord Ganesh, the elephant headed god for the luck he had thus far shown him. He…
